Graphic design combines the creativity and expression of fine art with the strategic thinking, problem-solving, and functionality of engineering. Good graphic design touches everyone. We all appreciate an attractive and easy to navigate web site, a beautiful poster, an insightful travel guide, and a clever ad.
Graphic design is a highly demanding, talent-based creative profession. It's extremely competitive. Breaking into the field requires rigorous and diligent preparation delivered from a respected four-year BFA program — like ours!
Students need to learn how to learn. I strive to provide a process and structure that students can adapt for themselves.
It is important to instill a level of expectation that accepts excellence as the only viable path to a satisfying creative career.
Prior to teaching, I was Senior Designer for Norwest Corporation (now Wells Fargo), a $50 billion international financial corporation formerly based in Minneapolis. I also owned and operated Pig’s Eye Design in St. Paul, and have served as a national board member and officer for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) as well as president and education director for AIGA Minnesota. I am also deeply involved with CVA branding and promotion.
