CVA is closely connected to the various professions associated with the majors we offer. We are right there with the most respected and esteemed design firms, galleries, museums, and recognized art and design institutions — regionally, nationally, and internationally. CVA also places great emphasis on academics. Our liberal arts offerings, honors program, and senior thesis capstone experience are unrivaled.
Graphic design combines the creativity and expression of fine art with the strategic thinking, problem-solving, and functionality of engineering. Good graphic design touches everyone. We all appreciate an attractive and easy to navigate web site, a beautiful poster, an insightful travel guide, and a clever ad.
Graphic design is a highly demanding, talent-based creative profession. It's extremely competitive. Breaking into the field requires rigorous and diligent preparation delivered from a respected four-year BFA program — like ours!
Students need to learn how to learn. I strive to provide a process and structure that students can adapt for themselves.
It is important to instill a level of expectation that accepts excellence as the only viable path to a satisfying creative career.
Prior to teaching, I was Senior Designer for Norwest Corporation (now Wells Fargo), a $50 billion international financial corporation formerly based in Minneapolis. I also owned and operated Pig’s Eye Design in St. Paul, and have served as a national board member and officer for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) as well as president and education director for AIGA Minnesota. I am also deeply involved with CVA branding and promotion.
