APPLICATION FORM AND FEE
Students begin the admissions process by submitting the application form with a $40 nonrefundable application fee. An application form can be obtained from CVA's Admissions Office or found online. Students are encouraged to apply online. At the end of the application there will be a request for a credit card number. The information will be sent to our admissions office via our secure server, and the credit card will be charged $40.00. The new applicant will be contacted by an admissions counselor after receiving the application. back to top

PERSONAL STATEMENT OF INTEREST
Prospective students have the opportunity to describe their interests and motivations in the visual arts, and why attending CVA will help achieve those goals in their personal statement. Students are encouraged to write their thoughts on art, past achievements or experiences, and future goals. If applicable, a student should address unusual circumstances that may have affected past academic performance. One to two pages is the recommended length for a statement of interest. back to top

TRANSCRIPTS
Applicants must present proof of high school graduation or its equivalent. Official, sealed transcripts from the high school and all postsecondary institutions attended must be sent directly to CVA's Admissions Office. (Please note that transcripts stamped "Issued to Student" are NOT considered official.)

If a student has not completed high school, he or she must submit General Equivalency Diploma (GED) scores in addition to an official high school transcript. If a bachelor's degree at a U.S. college or university has been obtained, a prospective student need not furnish a high school transcript. back to top

TEST SCORES
An ACT or SAT score is required for all applicants unless otherwise notified by Admissions. The college’s ACT code is 6117 and the SAT code is 6147.

Transfer Students: All applicants who are transferring from another college with more than 30 successfully completed college credits at an accredited institution do not have to submit test scores. Although not required, students may include test scores with their application materials to build a more complete record showing their academic potential. back to top

PORTFOLIO REVIEW
Portfolios should include between 12 - 20 examples of artwork that best exemplifies the applicant’s ability. It is recommended that half of the portfolio include drawings from direct observation. A portfolio may include drawing, painting, digital work, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video, and documentation of installation. The applicant may also supplement a portfolio with sketchbooks. A portfolio can be reviewed on campus or sent via mail.

Reviews are by appointment with the Admissions Office. Please plan to bring original work but slides or photographs can be used to represent oversize or three-dimensional work. Macintosh-compatible CDs are accepted for digital work and URLs are accepted for web sites containing student work.

Portfolios sent through the mail should consist of slides or Macintosh-compatible CDs. Slides of work must be labeled with the title and an arrow indicating the top of the slide. Work on CDs must be labeled with the title. A numbered slide list or inventory, detailing the title of the piece, size, media and date of completion must be included for slides and CDs. Do not mail original artwork, as the college cannot guarantee that it will not be damaged. For portfolios to be returned, a self addressed, stamped envelope must be included.

If you have any questions or concerns about the portfolio process, please feel free to contact the CVA Admissions Office. back to top

CAMPUS VISIT AND INTERVIEW
The atmosphere of a college is difficult to communicate through photographs and catalogs alone. We are proud of our distinctive community here at CVA, and we welcome visitors to the campus. Similarly, we appreciate the opportunity to meet applicants in person and to learn more about backgrounds and ambitions. Students wishing to enhance their portfolio for admission should strongly consider attending one of CVA's Portfolio Building Workshops, offered in the fall and winter, and/or our Pre-College Summer courses. Information on workshops and summer courses can be found on the CVA website or by contacting the Admissions Office. back to top

APPLICATION DEADLINES
The priority deadline for applications is March 1 if the applicant is interested in competing for a CVA merit scholarship. After this date applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the class is full. back to top

ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION
Applicants who have submitted all application materials by the priority deadline (May 1 for fall or December 1 for spring) will be notified of their admissions status within two weeks after fulfilling their application requirements. Applicant files are evaluated on a rolling basis until the class is full.

Conditional Acceptance: Applicants who do not meet CVA’s academic standards but show significant potential in other areas of the application may be admitted under Conditional Acceptance. Admission under Conditional Acceptance means the student must maintain a GPA of 2.0 ("C-" average) during their first semester at CVA. This is an opportunity for the student to show that they can successfully handle CVA’s rigorous curriculum. If the student meets this requirement, after their first semester, the status is removed. If the student is unable to fulfill this requirement, the student is academic suspended. back to top

TUITION DEPOSIT
Payment of a $200 tuition deposit secures a position at CVA for accepted applicants and allows new students to register for classes. This deposit is applied directly to the tuition cost. The balance of tuition is due during final registration and orientation which takes place the week before classes begin each semester. Deposits received before May 1, the National Reply Date, for fall semester and before December 1 for spring semester are refundable. Deposits received after May 1 or December 1 are non-refundable unless the refund is requested within three days after payment. back to top

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE
The college requires all students to acquire and maintain comprehensive personal health insurance. Information on health insurance plans is available from the Admissions Office. back to top

DIGITAL CAMERA
The college requires that all incoming students have a digital camera. CVA does not recommend a specific camera make/model, but offers thoughts on how to choose a camera in one of the Digital Tutor handouts. back to top
