TRANSFER STUDENTS
Any student who has previously attended another college or university prior to applying to CVA is considered a transfer student. This includes classes taken as part of Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO). The first step to becoming a CVA transfer student is to go through the application process.

Students will work with admissions to transfer credits into CVA. Please read the information below and talk to an admissions counselor for more details.

TRANSFER CREDIT
Transfer students must have official, sealed transcripts sent to CVA from their high school and all post-secondary institutions attended. Accepted students will go through an official evaluation of transfer credit with an admissions counselor. Applicants may transfer a maximum of 60 semester credits.

Credits may be evaluated when:
  1. Academic credits were earned at a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
  2. The applicant received a "C" or above in the course.
  3. The course is appropriate to CVA's curriculum (Remedial and developmental course credits will not be transferred).
TRANSFERRING STUDIO CREDIT
Students attempting to transfer studio credits must submit work completed in each course they wish to transfer. The appropriate department chair will be contacted to review the coursework. Decisions are based on the official transcripts, the quality of work, and equivalency of the work shown to classes offered at CVA. Transfer evaluations for all prospective studio credits should be submitted prior to the beginning of the term for which the student is seeking admission, as it may affect the student's registration. Transfer evaluation forms are available in the Admissions Office.

TRANSFERRING LIBERAL ARTS CREDIT
Liberal arts credits are not automatically transferred and must be assessed on an individual basis. Students attempting to transfer liberal arts credits must submit a course description and if possible, a syllabus and writing samples from each course they wish to transfer. The Chair of Liberal Arts Department will review the coursework. Decisions are based on the official transcripts, the quality of work, and equivalency of the work shown to classes offered at CVA. Transfer evaluations for all prospective liberal arts credits should be submitted prior to the beginning of the term for which the student is seeking admission, as it may affect the student's registration. Transfer evaluation forms are available in the Admissions Office.

FULL-TIME STUDENTS
Students are considered full-time when they carry 12 credit hours per semester. Students who plan to graduate within four years must take six semesters with a 15-credit load and two semesters carrying 18 credits. International students with F-1 or J-1 status are required to carry 15 credits, since falling below full-time status will cause that student to be classified "Out-of-Status" under SEVIS regulations.

PART-TIME STUDENTS
Students are considered part-time if they are enrolled in fewer than 12 credits per semester. While students are able to pursue a College of Visual Arts degree on a part-time basis, the college's small size does not allow classes to be offered exclusively during evening hours. Financial aid is adjusted for part-time students according to their course load. The college strongly encourages students to attend full-time in order to benefit from, and fully immerse themselves in, CVA's artistic and academic community.

JANUARY START/SUMMER FOUNDATION PROGRAM
Students may begin the First-Year Foundation Program in January, completing the second semester of their Foundation year in the summer.  This option gives students the opportunity to continue as sophomores at the start of the next academic year in the fall.  Students participating in the January Start/Summer Foundation Program must commit to both semesters.

NON-DEGREE STUDENTS
Students who do not plan to pursue a College of Visual Arts BFA degree may enroll in classes on a space-available basis and with permission from the appropriate department chair. Non-degree students need to complete general admissions procedures. Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid and are subject to the same tuition structure as part-time, degree students. Non-degree seeking students must meet their prerequisite courses or receive approval from the appropriate department chair.

SECOND-DEGREE STUDENTS
CVA frequently enrolls students who have already completed a bachelor's degree at other institutions. Second-degree students come to CVA from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds, including persons with considerable professional experience, as well as individuals with limited art and design experience.

Second-degree students are subject to the same policies as degree seeking students and must meet all standard admissions criteria. Second-degree students are eligible for limited financial aid and most available financial aid will be in the form of loans.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Most students at the College of Visual Arts are required to take College Expository Writing (Composition I) as part of the program. Students may seek exemption by taking the College-Level Examination Program test.

Students will be granted an exemption from College Expository Writing if they score 500 or more on the General Examination in English Composition (with essay).

Students may also request an exemption from College Expository Writing if they have scored 28 or more on the ACT test or 650 or more on the SAT test in the relevant subject areas.

Students who are granted exemption must substitute the credits with a liberal arts elective.

Students may request college credit for high school advanced placement courses and credit may be granted at the sole discretion of the College of Visual Arts.
