transfer/enrollment options

Many of our students come to CVA having previously attended other colleges or universities. Others are interested in part-time classes or already have a degree. We welcome applications from students with various educational backgrounds into our program and do all we can to make the transition as easy as possible.

TRANSFER STUDENT
Any student who has previously attended another college or university prior to applying to CVA is considered a transfer student. The first step to becoming a CVA student is to go through the application process. Students will work with admissions to transfer credits into CVA. Please read the information below and talk to an admissions counselor for more details. back to top

TRANSFER CREDIT
Transfer students must have official, sealed transcripts sent to CVA from their high school and all post-secondary institutions attended. Once all admissions materials have been received and a student has been accepted into the College, an official evaluation of transfer credit will be provided. Applicants may transfer a maximum of 60 semester credits. Academic credits earned at other regionally accredited post-secondary institutions will be accepted if the applicant received a "C" or above and if the course is appropriate to CVA's curriculum. Remedial and developmental course credits will not be transferred.

Students attempting to transfer studio credits must submit a portfolio that displays the range of work done in each course they wish to transfer. The appropriate faculty members will be contacted to review the coursework. Decisions are based on the official transcripts and the quality and equivalency of the work shown in the transfer portfolio to work done in similar classes at CVA. Studio credits are not automatically transferred and must be assessed on an individual basis. Transfer portfolios for all prospective studio credits should be submitted prior to the beginning of the term for which the student is seeking admission, as it may affect the student's registration. Guidelines for the transfer portfolio preparation are available from the Admissions Office.

Materials can be dropped off or mailed to the Admissions Department. All oversized and 3-Dimensional work should be represented by slides or photographs (Macintosh-compatible CDs are acceptable for digital work and URLs are accepted for web sites that contain student work). Slides must be labeled with the title and an arrow indicating the top of the slide.  Work on CDs must be labeled with the title. A numbered slide list or inventory, detailing the title of the piece, size, media and date of completion must be included for slides and CDs. If mailed, a self-addressed, stamped envelope should accompany slides and CDs for them to be returned. back to top

ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Most students at the College of Visual Arts are required to take College Expository Writing (Composition I) and Problem-Solving Math as part of their programs. Students may seek exemption from these required courses by taking College-Level Examination Program tests.

Students will be granted an exemption from College Expository Writing if they score 500 or more on the General Examination in English Composition (with essay). An exemption from Problem-Solving Math will be granted if the student scores more than 500 on the General Examination in college mathematics.

Students may also request an exemption from College Expository Writing and Problem-solving Math if they have scored 28 or more on the ACT test or 650 or more on the SAT test in the relevant subject areas.

Students who are granted exemption from one or both of these courses must substitute these credits with liberal arts electives.

Students may request college credit for high school advanced placement courses, and credit may be granted at the sole discretion of the College of Visual Arts. back to top

FULL-TIME STUDENTS
Students are considered full-time for financial aid when they carry 12 credit hours per semester. Students who plan to graduate within four years must take six semesters with a 15-credit load and two semesters carrying 18 credits. International students with F-1 or J-1 status are required to carry 15 credits, since falling below full-time status will cause that student to be classified "Out-of-Status" under SEVIS regulations. back to top

PART-TIME STUDENTS
Students are considered part-time if they are enrolled in fewer than 12 credits per semester. While students are able to pursue a College of Visual Arts degree on a part-time basis, the college's small size does not allow classes to be offered exclusively during evening hours. Financial aid is adjusted for part-time students according to their course load. The college strongly encourages students to attend full-time in order to benefit from, and fully immerse themselves in, CVA's artistic and academic community. back to top

SPRING/SUMMER FOUNDATION PROGRAM
Students may begin the first year foundation program in the spring semester, completing the second semester of their foundation year in the summer.  This option gives students the opportunity to continue as sophomores at the start of the next academic year in the fall.  Students participating in the Spring/Summer foundation program must commit to both spring and summer semesters. back to top

NON-DEGREE STUDENTS
Students who do not plan to pursue a College of Visual Arts BFA degree may enroll in classes on a space-available basis and with permission of the appropriate department chair. Non-degree students do not need to complete general admissions procedures, only a CVA application. Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid and are subject to the same tuition structure as part-time, degree students. The college does not offer non-degree students the option of taking courses on a non-credit or audit basis. Non-degree seeking students must meet their prerequisite courses, or receive approval from the appropriate department chair. If you are interested in enrolling as a non-degree student, contact CVA's Admissions Office. back to top

SECOND DEGREE STUDENTS
CVA frequently enrolls students who have already completed a bachelor's degree at other institutions. Second degree students come to CVA from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds, including persons with considerable professional experience, as well as individuals with limited art and design experience.

Second degree students are subject to the same policies as degree-seeking students and must meet all standard admissions criteria. Second degree students are eligible for limited financial aid, however most available financial aid will be in the form of loans. Contact the Admissions Office for specific application instructions. back to top

SUMMER DEGREE COURSES
The College offers a limited selection of studio and liberal arts courses in the summer for degree seeking students. These courses are offered for credit, and are the same in content and expectations as the courses offered during the regular semester. back to top
