art in new york city

Immerse yourself in the art, culture, and life of the Big Apple when you enroll in our summer program: Art in New York City. This six-week course offers an in-depth study of the cultural, art historical, and contemporary significance of New York. Students explore the role New York plays in the cultural life of the United States through a variety of critical readings that address the art, architecture, literature, and history of the city.

Art in New York City is offered as a three-credit Liberal Arts elective in humanities or art history and is taught by full-time CVA faculty Christina Schmid. The class is designed to broaden your visual vocabulary and introduce you to the rich culture of New York, the major U.S. center of art and design

The six-week course culminates in a week-long trip to New York, with CVA President Ann Ledy as your guide, where visits to world-renowned galleries, museums, and artist and designer studios provide a rich, sophisticated snapshot of this engaging global center of art and design. Museum hopping may include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center for Photography, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Cooper Hewitt, AIGA, and the Guggenheim Museum, to name a few.

The pace is quick, but there is still time to enjoy the world-famous sites of New York City. Typically, there is an evening entertainment event, a peaceful cruise around the tip of Manhattan, and a walk through Central Park.
