Mentoring Tradition: The Art Studio and its Continuing Contemporary Importance
When: Sun Feb 12, 2012
Where: Summit Building
Event Description: Professor Weisberg examines the role of women in the teaching of academic techniques as developed in the 1860s at the Académie Julian in Paris. Julian was the best of the many Paris ateliers, or art studios, designed to provide preparation for, or an alternative to, the École des Beaux-Arts. The lecture presents new research on Amelie Beury-Sorel, the wife of its founder, Rodolfe Julian, who was a successful portrait painter, teacher, patron of many women students, and later the head of the academy’s seventeen studios in Paris.
Weisberg explores the continuation of this mentoring tradition by women in art studios today and discusses the enduring importance of academic drawing and painting.

How Do Photographs Form Us?
When: Sun Feb 19, 2012
Where: Summit Building
Event Description: The photographs of Wing Young Huie document the socioeconomic and cultural realities of American society. His projects often focus on the urban cores of his home state of Minnesota and their immigrant populations, among the most numerous and diverse in the country.
Huie asks his audiences what they “see” in his photographs, then tells the stories behind them, thus raising awareness of the ambiguity and complexity of visual images. He broaches broader questions such as, “How are we influenced by the countless images created by the media, marketing forces, and popular entertainment?” The lecture also sheds light on Huie's creative process and shares the story of his 35-year journey as an artist.

Sex, Art, and Spectacle: Charlotte Moorman and the 1960s
When: Sun Feb 26, 2012
Where: Summit Building
Event Description: In 1967 performing artist Charlotte Moorman was arrested in New York City for playing partially nude. Since that day she has been most often remembered as “the Topless Cellist.” But Moorman made many other spectacular appearances: she played underwater, airborne, nude, wrapped in gauze, and covered with chocolate frosting. This lecture will trace Moorman’s colorful career, with an emphasis on her performances of the 1960s and her many collaborations with such artists as Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, and John Cage.
