"Inspired by childhood travel and the romantic appeal of natural history museums, this work is about the dizzying realization that the essential qualities of people, places, and things are largely unknowable. My figures are portraits of family members, people from history, and invented characters; they often share space with animals that are both familiar and bizarre. The combination of human/animal and banal/strange creates ambiguous narratives related to pursuing and collecting knowledge about the world outside of everyday experience."
   - Margaret McGee
