Author of more than 100 books on design and visual culture, and longstanding Art Director at The New York Times,
Steven Heller was guest lecturer for the 2007 CVA Leaders of Design Series. Heller is co-chair of the
Designer as Author MFA program and the co-founder of the Design Criticism MFA program at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
The Steven Heller Lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Visual Arts, Target Corporation, AIGA Minnesota, Larsen Design, and Studio On Fire.
The CVA Leaders of Design Series began in 2005 with the 30th anniversary exhibit of Larsen Design,
and in 2006 featured a lecture and exhibit by multidisciplinary designer Michael Vanderbyl.
The College of Visual Arts is a private, accredited, four-year college of art and design offering Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in graphic design,
illustration, photography, fine arts, general studio arts, and visual studies. Founded in 1924, the college is located in the
thriving urban residential areas of historic Summit Hill and Cathedral Hill in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Target Corporation is a founding member of the Five Percent Club, a landmark movement encouraging U.S.
corporations to commit 5% of pre-tax earnings to support the community.
AIGA Minnesota is the statewide local chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design.
Larsen Design is a communications design agency in Minneapolis and San Francisco,
serving businesses, institutions, and nonprofits in the U.S. and abroad with brand strategy, print collateral, interactive, and environmental design since 1975.
Studio On Fire, a design and letterpress workspace in Minneapolis, collaborates with creative firms,
printers, and individuals to produce work with a tactile and distinctively modern edge.
Common Good Books, located on Cathedral Hill across from the CVA Gallery
(165 Western Avenue, Suite 14), features everything from classic American literature to quality trash.
