New Student Orientation:
Blow-up Team Challenge

The CVA Blow-up Team Challenge: Create a Giant Inflatable Thingy is part of the College of Visual Arts 2010 freshman orientation. On the second day of orientation students will break into six teams. As part of a 3-dimensional exercise, new CVA students are given two plastic drop cloths, two rolls of 3M clear packing tape, one roll of string, anchor stakes, and a blower. Each team is given two hours to design and fabricate a 3-dimensional work that has no function or purpose other than to exist inflated. Read More...

Harmonious Hunan

In partnership with the City of Saint Paul, Public Art Saint Paul, and US-China Peoples Friendship Association of Minnesota, CVA presents artwork from Saint Paul's Sister City Changsha, China. Master Lei Yixin, commissioned artist for the Martin Luther King, Jr. sculpture to be constructed in the National Mall of Washington DC, will display his latest accomplishments. Rachel Breen: Local Topography

The third exhibition in the Portals on Western exhibition program features the artist and work of Rachel Breen. The exhibition, Local Topography, is an installation with 30 silhouettes of people who live, work, and go to school in the neighborhood. The corner of Selby and Western avenues is a vibrant microcosm of the city of St. Paul—an intersection of race, class, culture, age, origin, history, and ethnicity. Generation Abstraction: Selections from the Minnesota Museum of American Art

Mining the rich collection of the Minnesota Museum of American Art, this exhibition investigates the mid-century impulse to make art out of pure color, line, gesture, material, and surface. Starting with Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s through Minimalist forms in the 1970s, Generation Abstraction showcases a variety of responses to abstraction with important works by such artists as Joan Brown, George Morrison, Peter Voulkos, Eugene Larkin, and Louise Nevelson.
