A recent reception and discussion by alumnus Jay Wittenberg ’88 and Civil War historian Hampton Smith took place at the James J. Hill House in Saint Paul, Minnesota in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and Minnesota's participation in it. The reception was in conjunction with 76 Face of the First, an exhibition of 76 portraits of members of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment painted by Wittenberg. Jay researched historic photographs and other materials in order to create these portraits and their unique framing which includes symbols that identify the individual's army status and achievements.
