A solo exhibition of work by alumna Toby Sisson ’03 opens at air sweet air gallery on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. For INTO THE BLACK: NEW WORK BY TOBY SISSON she has created a series of traditional encaustic paintings asa well as encaustic monotype prints on rice paper with collage.
As Toby states, “My work attempts to make paradoxical concepts tangible through formal relationships, such as the use of blackness as both presence and absence, simultaneously weighted and ephemeral. I value the associative power of these abstractions, especially for their capacity to suggest particular ideas with simple shapes and colors. Notions of otherness, dissonance and instability are embedded in my compositions.”
Sisson is Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts where she teaches beginning and advanced drawing and painting, senior seminars on studio topics, and thesis.
