Alumna Madeline Crew ’12 explores the subconscious battle hidden within victims experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder in her first solo exhibition, PTSD: Coping with the Past Self, at Flow Art Space from November 7 - 17, 2012 in Minneapolis. Crew presents powerful imagery using large-scale photography and installation in this exhibition.
“This body of work was created to bring awareness to the specific traumas experienced by women and provide viewers with a look into the effects these traumas have on a person's psyche,” said Crew. “Traumatic events experienced by women, which differ from traumas that men often experience, develop into Post-traumatic Stress Disorder at highly alarming rates. Among the many symptoms that come along with PTSD, the harshest piece to cope with is the loss of self, and the phenomenon of Orpha, or the splitting of self during a traumatic event.”
The opening reception is Friday, November 9, 2012 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. There is also an artist talk and panel discussion with Crew and professors Christina Schmid and John Marshall on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
