In mid-September, 2008, Demeri Mullikin issued a volunteer "all call" to staff, faculty, students, and alumni interested in preparing the Summit Lower Garden for a proposed renovation project. CVA alumna Madonna White '68 has offered to spearhead an effort to refurbish the Lower Garden beginning in spring 2009.

On October 3 a group of volunteers spent the morning and early afternoon clearing away the garden area. The cool but sunny day was perfect weather for the garden clean up. Much of the brush and overgrowth in the lower garden had been cut back the day before by the stalwart CVA maintenance staff, Shawn Leko and Grant Mason. The volunteers were to tidy up, remove the cut brush, and haul away the debris.

The workers quickly fell into an efficient rhythm. Some pulled vines off of the surrounding limestone walls, others raked up and bagged garden tidbits, a few brave individuals grubbed small stumps, while others grabbed armfuls of brush and stacked them carefully on waiting trailers and truck beds. Others taking brief water (and sweet roll) breaks would offer words of encouragement to their fellow workers. All marveled at the open space that was uncovered. In what seemed like no time at all, the trucks and trailers were filled with brush and driven to a local compost site.

It was a fun, productive morning and a great first step in reclaiming the land. Next spring looks bright for the start of a new lower garden.
